Improve long note performance

Displaying long notes in a textview creates UI issues and data issues.

Perhaps the Android provided TextView isn't designed to display that much text.

Related: A user reports that their keyboard is not working when appending text to the top of very long notes. The keyboard itself is responsive and the letters respond to taps but the text does not appear in the note. Only the backspace key works. I'm not able to reproduce. They're using an LG G3 KitKat.

Another report of issues with long notes. The user can open the note but not edit it. Shorter notes are fine but notes of about 1800 words and can't be edited.

I had a recent case on #1802809-zen

The user said the note was 1500words long and it froze, but it's a combo of a previous version issue as well:

I believe that the version of the app that went into trouble was the latest version at that time (i.e. the latest version available before Feb 21). I also use Simplenote on my Android tablet and phone, as well as the web app. The android versions also froze whenever I tried to open a long note, which I believe had caused the problem. Later I produced a duplicate of the long note and deleted the original note. Then the android versions worked normally.

I use a bluetooth keyboard with my Android Pie device and when I use the up and down arrows to navigate the note, the screen doesn't adjust to the correct position although the cursor position is correct.

Should I add a new issue for this?

User report of lag when editing long notes in #2825083-zen:

On my phone its unbearably slow ( I have many notes and some notes are 16k + words) and hangs up the touch keyboard everytime.

I'm running version 2.4 and use a Galaxy A8 on Pie.

Simplenote runs terribly slow on large notes (~10k+ chars). On mobile, the input lag for each keystroke is 2s! Had to turn off keyboard animations too as the keyboard would freeze ~10s after just one word.
The shorter notes have an okay response time.

Hi! I also have trouble with very long notes (100+ pages in Google Docs). They take several seconds to load and every keystroke takes seconds to happen (lots of lag). Supporting big notes is one of the reasons why I choose Simplenote over other note taking apps (another being it's so beautiful!) but I usually end up editing my big notes on the Web app because the Android app doesn't handle them well.

Did anyone ever take a look at this? Long notes are fast on iOS, and in pc browsers, with edits happening instantly. But Android app still seems to struggle, with laggy response to keys and some dropping of keys if you type ahead of the buffer. This happens on a Samsung Tab A7.

Hi, was there a particular pr that addressed the speed issue? Was curious to see how it was attacked.

@michaelwexler sorry for lack of context, was closing old issues. I tested 1500 words and it was working fine. Don't think any change to the app fixed it, could be Android update and/or faster devices these days?
