Community meetup map #17
Description
This is an idea @AsafGartner had long ago that I think would be a very fun capability of the website. Basically, allow members of the site to put their location on a map along with a radius of how far they'd be willing to go for a Handmade programming meetup. This could allow for more organic discovery of community members that allows for meetups to form.
There are obviously plenty of privacy concerns that people might have with such a thing, but some ideas for how to mitigate those:
- Opt-in only, obviously
- Reasonable min/max radius + automatically jitter the location on storage by some amount
- Host our own map viewer somehow?
- Only allow locations to be changed once every 24 hours
- Don't reveal identities of others in range, simply report a count and let admins kick off the actual in-person connections
- Ensure that only users that have been admin-approved can see any results (or be seen by others)
