This display is a collection of seemingly non-assistive technology devices used in ways to augment a setup primarily designed for someone with cerebral palsy.

Purpose of the display

This station highlights how mainstream devices can be adapted and customized to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities. By using assistive accessories and innovative configurations, this setup provides accessible solutions for users with limited mobility or vision.

Detailed description

The display showcases an accessible workspace on a white table, featuring a variety of adaptive tools and technologies thoughtfully configured to support diverse user needs:

Clevy Keyboard

A high-contrast, color-coded keyboard with large, easy-to-read letters and symbols.

The keyboard is divided into color zones for better key recognition: red for numbers, green for function keys, orange for punctuation, and blue for letters.

A transparent key guard overlays the keyboard, preventing accidental key presses. This accessory is particularly useful for individuals who may drag their hands across the keys or lack precise motor control. The key guard has cutouts for each key, ensuring accessibility without compromising functionality.

Kensington Expert Mouse

A large trackball device positioned to the left of the keyboard.

The trackball is glossy red, encased in a black ergonomic base. This tool is designed for individuals with limited fine motor control, allowing them to move the cursor with broader, less precise hand movements.

Four large, customizable buttons surround the trackball, providing additional functionality, such as left and right clicks or scrolling.

Microsoft Adaptive Mouse

Positioned to the right of the keyboard, this mouse is modified with a 3D-printed tail attachment.

The attachment reconfigures the mouse into a two-button switch, which can be activated with minimal effort, offering an alternative input method for users unable to use a traditional mouse.

The mouse’s white casing and ergonomic design ensure comfort and ease of use.

Surface Pro X on Adjustable Stand

A Surface Pro X is mounted on a sleek, height-adjustable stand in the center of the display.

The stand allows the screen to be tilted or raised closer to the user’s eye level, accommodating individuals in wheelchairs or those with cortical visual impairments. The tablet and keyboard are untethered, enabling flexible positioning for optimal accessibility.

The screen reflects minimal glare under the room’s lighting, ensuring readability for individuals with visual processing difficulties.

Overall Layout and Environment

The display table is situated in a well-lit room with a gray carpet and modern wooden furniture. A Surface QR Code tag is placed on the right side of the table for quick access to related digital content.

The orange cushioned bench to the left provides a warm contrast to the predominantly neutral-colored environment.

This setup exemplifies how mainstream technologies can be enhanced with thoughtful adaptations to empower individuals with disabilities, promoting independence and functionality. The display emphasizes usability and modularity for a range of motor and visual needs.
