Setting limiting magnitude to faint value produces strange behavior

I get either no stars or a hang if the limiting magnitude is set to a very faint value. I made a pull request regarding this. I also made unrelated changes (getting rid of GRVS limit) that you probably don't want, so be careful about just pulling in the changes.
