SPFx Logging API - upcoming improvements or recommendations?

I am looking into different logging solutions in SPFx and was curious what others are doing in this area. I am looking at the built in Log from @microsoft/sp-core-library and PnP Logging. Is there a big advantage with one over the other?

I heard there might be some expansion to the sp-core-library Log class. The Logging API page is a few years old (https://github.com/SharePoint/sp-dev-docs/wiki/Working-with-the-Logging-API) so I'm curious if there are any updates coming.
