How to add more disk space to VM

VM right now has 30GB free disk space, a user can potentially expand this in two ways.

1. Using vmspecific tools to expand the harddisk and then extend the partition. (to extend use something like gparted)
2. By attaching another harddisk of large size as a folder and then using that folder for day in day out data.
3. Using shared folders to keep data on base machine and use it both sides.

We need a proper document explaining all steps for both VirtualBox and Vmware
