Keynote Speaker Bios and Abstracts

Keynote 1

"6G: Towards A Hyper-Connected Experience for All" - Sunghyun Choi, Executive Vice President, Head of Advanced Communications Research Center, Samsung Research

Abstract: Since the first commercial launch in 2019, 5G has grown to be core infrastructure for a wide range of industries. It has been used to support everything from high-quality communication, to smart factories, to vehicle-to-vehicle communication and a whole raft of other new services. Learnings from past 5G deployments and how they are dealt with within 3GPP will be discussed. While 5G is currently being commercialized, industry and academia are beginning research to shape the next generation of communication, namely 6G. In the 6G era, the main users will be both machine as well as human, leading to many new forms of advanced services, such as truly immersive extended reality, high-fidelity mobile holograms and digital twins. We are currently researching various candidate technologies to enable 6G. For 5G, mmWave communications was introduced, and now (sub-) THz communication utilizing the spectrum ranging from 100 GHz to 10 THz is being considered to meet the stringent requirements of 6G. In this talk, I will introduce 6G candidate technologies with the emphasis on (sub)-THz and advanced duplexing schemes along with the current developments status within Samsung.

Bio: Sunghyun Choi is an Executive Vice President and Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research, Samsung Electronics, Seoul, Korea. He was a professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Seoul National University (SNU), Seoul, Korea from Sept. 2002 to Aug. 2019, and served as a Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Engineering during the last two years at SNU. He received his B.S. (summa cum laude) and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1992 and 1994, respectively, and received Ph.D. at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1999. He is currently heading researches and standardization for 6G, B5G, and IoT connectivity at Samsung Research. He co-authored over 250 technical papers and holds over 160 patents, and numerous patents pending. He has served as a Program Committee Co-Chair of IEEE WCNC 2020, IEEE DySPAN 2018, ACM Multimedia 2007, and IEEE WoWMoM 2007. He has served as an editor of numerous publications including IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, and IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine. He was named IEEE fellow in 2014.

Keynote 2

"Solving the Densification problem" - Amitava Ghosh, Nokia Fellow and Head, Radio Interface Group, Nokia Bell Labs

Abstract: In this talk, we will focus on network densification which is needed to serve the exponential traffic growth. Various densification strategies are discussed including fiber, integrated access and backhaul (IAB) and repeaters. Finally, a brief overview of Sub THz spectrum and deployment is provided. Sub-THz may be leveraged for backhaul and fronthaul to support further densification.

Bio: Amitava Ghosh is a Nokia Fellow and works at Nokia Standards and Strategy. He joined Motorola in 1990 after receiving his Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from Southern Methodist University, Dallas. Since joining Motorola he worked on multiple wireless technologies starting from IS-95, cdma-2000, 1xEV-DV/1XTREME, 1xEV-DO, UMTS, HSPA, 802.16e/WiMAX and 3GPP LTE. He has 60 issued patents, has written multiple book chapters and has authored numerous external and internal technical papers. He is currently working on 5G Evolution and 6G technologies. Recently, he was elected chair of the NextGA (an US 6G initiative) National Roadmap Working Group. His research interests are in the area of digital communications, signal processing and wireless communications. He is the recipient of 2016 IEEE Stephen O. Rice and 2017 Neal Shephard prize, member of IEEE Access editorial board and co-author of the book titled "Essentials of LTE and LTE-A".

Keynote 3

"Lessons learnt from 5G mmWave measurements" - Monisha Ghosh, Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Notre Dame; Policy Outreach Director, SpectrumX

Abstract: The past two years have witnessed an impressive roll-out of 5G mmwave deployments in major US cities. While these are still early days for mmWave, measurements on deployed networks can be extremely valuable in understanding the promise, and limitations, of mmWave (and future THz) cellular networks. This talk will summarize the results of recent measurements on 5G networks in Chicago and Miami and present conclusions on throughput, coverage, latency and thermal performance of present day networks that will illustrate open research challenges.

Bio: Monisha Ghosh is a Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Notre Dame and the Policy Outreach Director of SpectrumX, the first NSF Spectrum Innovation Center. Prior to this, she was the Chief Technology Officer for the FCC, a Program Director at NSF and a Research Professor at the University of Chicago. She also has extensive industry experience at Interdigital, Philips Research and Bell Labs. She received her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California in 1991, and her B. Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (India) in 1986. She is a Fellow of the IEEE.
