How do I turn on global transparency for all windows?

Unfortunately, I have no idea what global transparency means in this context, can you elaborate? Preferably with some screenshots if things don't work as you'd expect (so a screenshot of doesn't work and another of where it works on another compositor / x11 window manager).

I think what the user meant by global transparency is applying a default alpha value to all toplevel windows through window-rules:

toplevel_alpha = on created if (type is "toplevel") then set alpha 0.5
