E.A.R Blender Addon does not start

Just found this amazing project, sadly there has been no work done fore quite some time.
I followed the instructions for example 1.

Blender 2.6 shall be used, which does not run on macOs 10.12.6 anymore.
But the plugin throws the following errors when trying to open it in blender 2.79:

Can't believe why this isn't more popular among architects, game audio designers etc.

Unfortunately I don't have the resource to keep this up to date with the fast-paced blender developments. My suspicion is that the required changes would be fairly minimal, but I don't have time to look into it.

I can recommend: http://openpstd.org/Download%20openPSTD.html

It's a bit more academic and has more restrictions on input geometries, but is much more correct.

I was thinking about building something like this project (ultimately, it could be awesome to have something similar to Cycles but for audio), so now I want to try it and would gladly look into it, at least to make it work with last versions of Blender.

Blender doesn't allow (anymore ?) access to the context data at registration of the addon, by commenting line https://github.com/aothms/ear/blob/master/blender/render_EAR/__init__.py#L141 the error will be gone (but the executable path must be manually entered). Didn't make a pull request because it's not really a solution.

@ImagicTheCat Thanks for tracking this down. Honestly a try-catch statement would already be an improvement. Otherwise, yeah, you'll probably need to hide the path behind an 'advanced' checkbox or something and call setup_exec_path() either (a) when the checkbox is checked and the path is first displayed or (b) when the data is exported for the first time.

If you could reuse the ray generation and intersection code from cycles (or LuxCore for that matter). That would be so much better than this as you'd get GPU acceleration and a much more efficient spatial intersection for free. Otherwise you really need to make an effort during modeling to keep triangle counts low (which is not necessarily a bad for acoustics though).

Hello, I just learned about E.A.R. I amlooking forward to use it with a group of persons as a pedagogic tool in the architecture field. I strive to rise awareness about aurality of architecture and am looking to integrated somekind of tool that would allow me to better design projects regarding that matter.
Looking at this page, it seems that there is sometweaking to do in coding (recent OS system not compatible anymore, some coding line to be corrected...). Would there be a way to help me use it within an architecture design studio, for a group of students using both Mac and Windows laptop.

It's just that the editor has been built as a addon for Blender, and in the eight years that have passed Blender has changed some things. This is understandable. It's probably easiest to go back in time and find a Blender version of roughly the same age and try to use that.

I'm actually trying to change the script enough for it to work in version 3.1.x, but I can't seem to get it to show up in any of the panels 😅
