Documentation: understanding when to use "api", "fast", or "query" query types

Hi,

As a developer who's not too familiar with the internals of Sitecore, it would be great if the documentation could explain why one would choose a particular query type. Could the documentation be enhanced to explain how one might choose one method over another?
