\section{Closing Thoughts}
What I hope you've come to appreciate is that the mathematical machinery that you face in your first year of graduate school may appear daunting at first, but that you're never too far off from some variation of the harmonic oscillator. Green's functions are a powerful tool for solving differential equations, but we found that their \emph{analytic structure} tells is about the underlying physics of our theory. We waxed poetic about going from a harmonic oscillator to a field and how this is connected to the idea of extending time to spacetime. We danced carefully with the picture of functions as infinite-dimensional function spaces that could be understood in their discretized form as large-but-finite-dimensional vector spaces. We said a few words about the notion of effective theory and action principles. After arguing that everything really does reduce to something like a harmonic oscillator, we showed one way (perturbation theory) to deal with the \emph{non-linearities} that make \emph{actual} physics really interesting. There are any number of directions for you to go from here. Experimentalists and observers may want to dig into statistics and probability, condensed matter folks may flock to statistical mechanics while particle folks head to quantum field theory (only to discover that at the hearts of their respective fields they are speaking dialects of the same language\footnote{... that differ by an $i$}). From here on out, \emph{you} define your path through mathematical physics: what you need for your work, what tickles your fancy, and what gets a slice of your precious attention as you set forth in your scientific careers.

I appreciate the advice of my more experienced colleagues when shaping this course and the many fantastic physics references out there that each take their own twists through mathematical physics. I am especially appreciative to the textbooks by Stone and Goldbart as well as that by Cahill. Those two references not only inspired big portions of these notes, but also led me down hours of delightful rabbit holes of enlightenment that did not necessarily end up in my course.
