The big issue with open source software in general is that development and UX/UI design is done by the same people, who are expert in programming but definitely not expert in UI/UX and graphics. Furthermore, they tend to be technical people that love to customize stuff, so they often struggle to understand the end users point of view (who for the most part don't mess up with defaults and customization of GUI). This is generally speaking.
In its current state, the app UI has lots of little things that are pretty annoying, frustrating or plainly wrong from UX theory standpoint (just look at your issues list here on GitHub, there are plenty).
So my proposal is you hire a UX consultancy firm that would provide expert and authoritative feedback on the UI/UX and would give useful advices and mockups on how to improve. Of course it would be a temporary thing, not a permanent hire (if cost is an issue). A professional feedback and work is definitely needed to make the app more user friendly and spread amongst everyday folks.
Hope this is something you'll consider!
