The documentation on math expressions says:

$$\alpha$$: quoted by double-dollar $$
[...]

This is not correct. $$ is always block (display) style math.

Ah, you're right. I'd tested this with just

$$\alpha$$

which gives display math; the inline math only triggers if there are characters before or after the math block.
