Bug description

nextcloud FileProviderExt downloads even when snyc is turned off.

not sure if this is related: then in the morning my macbook was sort of frozen, weirdly. read more below...

Steps to reproduce

first I noticed nextcloud symbol in taskbar at the top was showing sync activity. I checkt the second account where i am logged in which is not my personal, it was constantly switching from snycing to everything synced complete. I checkt which files could be new, there where none. also my private cloud was the same since a few hours.
I have "stats.app" running and it showd me dowload activity (about 6MB/s which is quite the maximimum speed my internet provider has currently. and I see this download also in my router statistics. at about 2am at night today (19th july). unfortunately I did not take a screenshot of the stats.app, but it showd me the "FileProviderExt" was downloading files.
I paused all sync for both accounts. but it still continued downloading.
at that point I freaked out a little and quit nextcloud. than the router and "stats.app" also stopped showing activity.
I have really no idea what that was.

about the macbook freeze:
when it was frozen in the morning i could see the screen for a while, but did not click anything, keyboard did not respond. except for CMD + CTR + Q (lock screen). then i could not get the mac to wake up, the screen turnd on but was black and colour mouswheel keppt spinning. nothing came up for a few hours, when I did a hard shutdown.
i did run apple diagnostics, but all fine.

my client install method is with hombrew.

let me know if you need anything else to know I missed to share.

My nextcloud.log is about 20MB of size. I can try to geht the log for the second account, but I am no admin over there. so I reached out to the admin to get it. I share it once I have it.

1. In case of the Nextcloud desktop client, the file provider extension depends on its main app running (despite the whole file provider framework is designed for file provider extensions to operate fully autonomously).
2. The file provider extension downloads content only as a result of user interaction and intent. Either momentarily due to an action like opening a file which is not "materialized" yet or because the item is marked as "Alway keep available offline" which sets the content policy for it to always download the updated remote content for offline availability.
3. The synchronization pause is a manual user control mechanism which applies to the classic folder synchronization which is performed by the main app. This barely makes sense in the concept of file providers and also appears hardly reconcilable with it. In file providers, downloads happen only based on prior explicit user intent anyway. And it would cause errors every time content interaction with a file provider item is intended which contradicts whatever the device is used for at that moment. It boils down to a "Break on-demand download" switch in case of file providers. 😵‍💫
4. Your log is about a MySQL database server which has become unavailable (or crashed?) which is unrelated to your initial report of downloads by the file provider.
5. Your macOS freezing can be for an endless list of reasons but right now there appears no connection to that 🔮🧙🏼‍♀️ – never had a crash due to the Nextcloud desktop client or in general on macOS since years now (except for the few times where I intentionally squeezed out every last byte of memory with LM Studio).

Okay, this means that content is only downloaded on demand or when it was already downloaded and a new version is available on the server.

I do not know what exactly you refer to. I think you mean a switch we had last year in version 3 and (IIRC) 4 which switched the file provider to no longer enumerate all server-side content automatically but only on demand. That does not exist anymore. It now only enumerates server folders when necessary. This was a change that prove necessary because it does not scale for large data structures or server deployments (think about thousands of clients checking hundred thousands of folders simultaneously, such scale).

This confuses me. So, you have not provided any local state information like a debug archive (you do not have to because we do not have an anonymized logging system in place but on the roadmap). Do you mean you have enforced file provider content download of all items manually and they are now available locally (no cloud symbol in Finder, see user manual about sync status indicators)?

but: I have not seen green check for files and folders for a while, until now when I restarted nextcloud they suddenly appeared again. what is happening? It was syncing fine all the time, and every now and then the green checks disappear, as it continued syncing i did not mind. probably good to know: my other cloud storage applications (kDrive) did not show such green checks as well and just appeared in the very same moment again.
while still there are a few documents in nextcloud which do not have such a green check. and the right click menu nextcloud options are greyed out for those files.
