Hello World app does nothing

I am trying out nwjs and I am starting with the first step, hello world example. I have created the package.json file as given and the index.html file. When I run the nw command in the directory, as given in the instructions, it does (from what I can see) exactly nothing. I mean, the command produces no window and no messages in the command line. It exits seemingly instantly.

If I just run nw without the '.' parameter, the default nw splash (with the little compass) runs and displays. Is there some other step that is required?

If I change the name of package.json to something else, I get an error that the manifest is missing or unreadable. So it seems like it's being read. How do I get a window to display?

Resaving package.json as UTF-8 with no BOM resolved this. An error message would be nice. No output and no screen is really the worst possible choice here.
