Feature Description
Add a public-facing Author Profile Page to Open edX — a learner-accessible page that displays an author's identity (name, photo, title, affiliation, biography, credentials, and external/social links) and aggregates all courses and programs they have authored into a single, filterable hub.
Today, course authors are not first-class entities on the Open edX platform: an instructor's name appears on the course About page, but there is no canonical place to see their full catalog, credentials, or institutional identity, and no way to navigate from one of their courses to the others.
The feature is built as a new route in the existing Catalog MFE and delivered in two milestones:
- Milestone 1 (MVP) — Author Profile Page. A dedicated page at
/author/<author_slug> showing the author's header (photo, name, title, credentials, affiliation, biography, external links) and a paginated list of their programs and courses, with filtering by tags and sorting by newest, enrollment status, or title. Platform administrators create and manage author profiles through Django Admin; an author's authored courses and programs appear on the profile automatically once they are added to the course team. The feature ships behind a per-deployment feature toggle.
- Milestone 2 — Author Directory and Self-Service Editing. A searchable directory page at
/authors listing every author on the Open edX platform (photo, name, title, affiliation, course and program counts) with search by name and filters by affiliation and area of expertise, plus an authenticated editing page at /author/<author_slug>/edit where authors maintain their own profile without administrator involvement.
The result: learners can evaluate an instructor's credibility before enrolling, easily find other courses by an author whose teaching they liked, and discover new authors through a dedicated directory — bringing Open edX in line with author/instructor profile experiences already shipped by Coursera, Udemy, LinkedIn Learning, and LearnDash.
