Propose:change systemd to openrc or openrc with sysvinit

Hello linux mint team im proposing change systemd to openrc and the part of developing the principal openrc thing will be of openrc team and the port for linux mint is from linux mint team and will be easy because apt supports systemd and openrc in the sysvinit with openrc or openrc as manager and init or take sysvinit only and systemd method from mx linux and add openrc in the layout

Why openrc

Because will be more light and fast and will be old pc live saver because openrc use a different boot start that is fast and reliable and systemd has too many functions and that is bad for slow pcs or old pcs because generally the slow and old pcs come with 2gb the minimal ram for linux mint cinnamon or 4gb and the openrc still have useful functions but not too many because when there are too many it becomes bad and slow and heavy

Why systemd have some useful functions

Is because systemd journald is important for debug using the dmesg and journald tool or using cat in the logs or in other inits use other log managers to discover errors like driver failure for example, systemd-udev to set usb ports rules and systemd-logind to have an interface and etc

Why elogind for an interface

Is because elogind is a replacement of systemd-logind for non-systemd linux distros like void linux and elogind i think in the "orphan-sysvinit-scripts" have the elogind script.

Why is easy with apt

First apt works with openrc or systemd and etc because dpkg have more than 1 service manager support, but pacman when is not arco linux only works with systemd, and the sysvinit script pkg if is accepted is the "orphan-sysvinit-scripts" pkg that contains scripts for services like NetworkManager and etc.

Explaining mx linux layout

Mx linux uses systemd and sysvinit only i think but still is possible add openrc as service manager of sysvinit but still sysvinit do the runlevel things and etc while openrc start the services.

Replacing systemd, even if it may seem simple and quick, isn't the case if you want optimal support for other init systems. It's also not particularly heavy; there are things that are heavier, such as DEs (and Mint already supports lighter ones than Cinnamon), and using so many Snap packages is even more so. The Mint team is already working hard to avoid the same degradation as Ubuntu, which is increasingly migrating more and more basic components to Snap.

I've already done several installations of Mint on very old and limited PCs; with DE Mate (XFCE is lighter, but I'd noticed it wasn't optimal for beginners in something. However, I haven't tried it in recent years.) it's slightly better, and I've only made a few small changes. Some people have been able to continue using their older PCs; they have more up-to-date and faster systems, such as an old dual-core Celeron that struggled with Windows 10, another dual-core with only 3GB of RAM that struggled even with Windows 7, and an iMac from 2007 that was almost unusable with iOS.
There are PCs that work well even with mint 22.3 cinnamon even if they are old like my mother's with an i7 from 2011.

I don't think the change of the init system is something the mint team should consider, I don't see any real advantages and unfortunately they already have to spend a lot of time due to the worsening of Ubuntu (with the increase of snaps in the base components) and also regarding other things which pushed them to create forks of some software.

yes i know that is hard to do and im understanded you and curiosity is possible to install the openrc after install mint and yes mate and xfce is lighter than cinnamon and wayland is a gigant job for linux mint team and this means almost no time only to test the wayland so yeah no time and dont need and wow your mother's computer with i7 from 2011 omg and backing to the init thing yes is not too hard but is not possible and is more hard to convert snap to deb and thats means no time

There are several things made specifically for systemd that would need to be adapted in the main and also in mint-specific packages, not to mention others in the rest of the software (and they wouldn't technically be able to check and fix everything in the repo). I don't even know if there's a Debian derivative that uses openrc entirely that could take the changes from and save time, so I'm guessing it would take longer than the forced snap packages from Ubuntu.

yes I have heard about it several times but never tried it, I know they modify hundreds of packages to make them work without systemd.

I don't seem to see many problems in systemd, as users who are against it have reported in the debian-devel ml (as far as I remember). What worries me most is Ubuntu's continuous deterioration with the constant transition of base components to snap and perhaps another relevant thing, more recently the replacement of coreutils with uutils. However, I haven't tried Ubuntu 26.04 yet. I've only seen that they've reported many bugs and problems with scripts and it would perhaps have been an issue I should have tested at work, but since we've decommissioned the few Ubuntu servers (and almost all of them are Debian), it's not a priority.
