BUG - minor: running dms without root silently fails

When setting up a new instance on an Ubuntu server, when I try to run dms -h, it silently fails unless the account has root privs.

Expected Behaviour

Inform the user that dms can't do anything useful without root.

Actual Behaviour

Nothing
