make the --verbose flag more functional in the optimize_*.py scripts

Right now the extent of verbosity is not very well matched withe th preseicne of the --verbose flag.

• There are several print statements that need to be removed "Are any delta_u_ij values nan?"
• Too many alpha_k values are printed out when the --verbose flag is NOT specified.
