🔆 Project Firefly Solar-Powered Bioluminescent Emergency Communication & Lighting System When the grid goes down, Firefly keeps the lights on and the signals alive. What Is Firefly? Project Firefly is a solar-powered infrastructure resilience system built for one scenario: everything fails. Grid down. Networks down. EMP event. Natural disaster. Mass outage. Firefly addresses the two most critical needs in that moment: Light — restoring visibility and safety when darkness becomes a liability Communication — coordinating people when every conventional channel is gone Firefly captures freely available solar energy, stores it in deep-cycle battery banks, and deploys it as a networked emergency lighting and optical signaling system — capable of powering individual units, city blocks, or entire towns. The Problem Large-scale infrastructure failures — including EMP events — don't just cut power. They eliminate the ability to: See (no street lights, no interior lighting) Communicate (no cell networks, no radio in hardened scenarios) Coordinate (no signals, no way to indicate status or danger) Most emergency systems depend on the very infrastructure that failed. Firefly doesn't. How It Works Power Layer: Solar → Battery → Light Code Solar collection tracked in real-time across the day cycle Battery bank maintains charge history with 72+ hour backup duration Max output: 2,000W System auto-manages power conservation (street lights deactivate when not needed, reactivate on demand) Day/Night simulation for testing and scheduling Communication Layer: Optical Signal Protocol When networks are unavailable, Firefly units communicate through bioluminescent light pulse patterns: Signal Pattern Meaning 🟢 Green — Slow Pulse NORMAL All Clear 🔴 Red — Fast Pulse EMERGENCY Immediate Danger / Alert Each physical Firefly unit has a unique ID (e.g., FF-092-ALPHA) and broadcasts its signal status — ROUTINE BEACON or EMERGENCY BROADCAST — across the network. Network Layer: Connected Light Units Firefly manages geographically distributed light nodes from a single dashboard: Main St — Unit A / Unit B Oak Ave — Unit A / Unit B Park Entrance Community Center All nodes report status (ACTIVE / OFFLINE) in real-time. Operators control individual units or broadcast network-wide signal changes. Dashboard Features Power Flow Panel — Live view of Solar → Battery → Lights energy chain Solar Efficiency Chart — Output tracking across the day (06:00–18:00) Battery History Chart — 24-hour charge level history Signal Control — Toggle between NORMAL and EMERGENCY broadcast modes Connected Light Units — Network map of all deployed nodes with live status System Terminal — Live event log (sunlight detected, charging, lights activated/deactivated) System Specs Panel — Hardware configuration reference System Specs Component Spec Solar Panels 4 × 100W Battery Type Deep Cycle Charge Controller MPPT 30A Max Output 2,000W Backup Duration 72+ Hours Use Cases Municipal emergency preparedness — city and town backup lighting networks Post-EMP continuity — infrastructure that survives electromagnetic pulse events Disaster response coordination — optical signaling when comms are down Off-grid communities — permanent solar-powered lighting infrastructure FEMA / emergency management — deployable resilience nodes Military base perimeter / FOB lighting — low-signature optical communication Architecture Two-layer design: Solar Resilience Layer — Energy capture, storage, and distribution Optical Communication Layer — Signal protocol for coordination under constraint Design priorities: Continuity over complexity Human authority over automation Function under failure, not ideal conditions Project Status ✅ Dashboard UI — complete ✅ Power system simulation — complete ✅ Signal control system — complete ✅ Multi-node network management — complete ✅ System terminal / event logging — complete 🔧 Hardware prototype — in development 🔧 Mesh network integration — planned Creator Loretta Chapman — AI Systems Architect, Founder of AI&U Built: December 2025 Firefly is part of a broader portfolio of AI-powered systems designed to protect human life in high-stakes environments. "The goal is coordination under constraint — not speed, not scale, but reliability during high-stress, uncomfortable, and time-critical conditions."
