NeoDex

NeoDex is a Warcraft III modeling kit for 3ds Max and GMAX — a toolset for creating, editing and exporting Warcraft III models (.mdx / .mdl) with ease.

It works on both 3ds Max (any version from Max 5 and up) and GMAX. In 3ds Max it can export to both MDX and MDL; GMAX exports to MDL only (with a couple of extra steps).

This version (2.7) is being published here on GitHub for archival — it predates my GitHub account and never got pushed up at the time.

What it does

NeoDex is composed of two main sets:

  • Plugins — reproduce Warcraft III–style scene objects directly inside Max/GMAX: ribbon emitters, particle emitters, attach points, materials, vertex colors, collision shapes, etc.
  • Tools — a flexible set of utilities that make the modeling, rigging, animation and export process much easier: importer, exporter, animation tools, IK snapper, key reducer, mesh tools, skin tools, scene/sequence/bone managers, and more.

Installation

  1. Close 3ds Max / GMAX if it is already running.
  2. Extract all the folders in this repo into your 3ds Max / GMAX installation folder.
  3. Start 3ds Max / GMAX.
  4. Open the Utility panel and choose MAXScript → Run Script (or use the top menu).
  5. Select NeoDexInstaller and run it.
  6. A new NeoDex menu should now appear in the top-right.

Note for GMAX

Since 2.5 there is a harmless quirk: the first time you run the installer in GMAX it throws an error. Just restart GMAX and run the installer again — if everything was extracted correctly it will work the second time.

Installing extra plugins

Since NeoDex 2.5, user-made plugins can be added on top of NeoDex. Drop the user plugin into Scripts\NeoDexExtraTools and re-run the NeoDex Installer.
