Hi, I'm Adam 👋

I am a quantitative research associate working with the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland Maine. I work in the Integrated Systems Ecology Lab led by Dr. Kathy Mills focusing on the distillation of climate and fisheries data to understand how the rapid and projected warming affects the ecosystem, fisheries, and coastal communities. I enjoy using data science tools like shiny and quarto to tell the stories of data around fisheries and climate change. I see a lot of value in giving the audience an opportunity to explore their own questions with the available information, as I believe it fosters a better understanding of the complex interactions at play.

The ocean waters off the Northeast US region has been experiencing rapid warming and much of my work has used this region as a lens by-which to gain insight into the impacts of global warming on marine species. I monitor and report on [Gulf of Maine sea surface temperature warming](https://adamkemberling.github.io/oisst_mainstays/R/markdown_reports/GOM_Annual_Report.html, building the data infrastructure and the visuals used for the reports. Using this area as a natural experiment, our group has taken a look into how species are responding (or not) to changes in the environment through actions like relocation or through physiological changes.

Recently my work responsibilities have been centered on the data-engineering side for projects that require large geospatial datasets like global climate and/or ocean models. I've been developing the data processing pipelines that support our project needs, with an interest on building infrastructure to streamline the experience of using these products. The work we've done in preparing regional seasonally bias-corrected climate model ensembles is used in our projections of species distribution changes.

Much of my body of work has consisted of analyses which relied upon long-term fisheries-independent monitoring programs. Using data from the the Northeast US groundfish trawl Survey I've explored community size-structure changes in the groundfish community. I've also worked on zooplankton community analyses using the Continuous Plankton Recorder CPR datasets for the Gulf of Maine and Mid-Atlantic Bight regions. These bodies of work have both related remotely sensed data products like NOAA's OISST dataset in addition to the NERACOOS Buoy Array to relate fish and zooplankton timeseries patterns to changes in the marine environment.

The majority off my projects are done using the R programming language, with its incredible ecosystem of open-source tools and vibrant community. I also use python for other projects where the tooling better suites our needs. Projects that involve large multi-dimensional arrays like ocean and climate model outputs are typically cases where I would make this tooling switch.

My research interests are in modeling how a changing marine environment impacts habitat use and community compositions across the world's oceans. I really enjoy the opportunity to explore these questions, and the challenges and nuance that they bring with them.
