Can you perhaps explain a little bit what you intend to achieve with this change? It looks a bit large, so perhaps we can gain by splitting it into multiple pull requests.

@dwt One of my colleagues has been using the library on one of his 3.8 projects. Recently they upgraded to 3.12. He faced issues installing the library and finding any similar alternative.
So I just upgraded the dependencies, made some changes to make it compatible with Python 3.12.

This would be easier to review, and merge, if the ruff formatting change and the switch to the main branch where in separate pull requests. Would you mind separating that out?
