Welcome to my GitHub Reposatory

I’m a biologist with a focus on population genetics, bioinformatics, and data visualisation. Here I share projects that explore open datasets through analysis, mapping, and other forms of data-driven storytelling.

Dash python - fdir turistfiske choropleth (updated september 2025)

Note: this page is hosted on PythonAnywhere for free, so it's only 100s of compute time / 24 h! Will upgrade if anyone shows interest in the page.

Dashboard contains interactive choropleth map of registered catched/released fish by guided fishing companies in Norway. Choropleth shows summaries for county, municipality and for the company itself. It can also be filtered by species caught and year.

Data used is available at fiskeridirektoratets webpage Åpne data: fangst i turistfiske

Shiny R - Visualisering av partifinansiering (updated autumn 2025)

This interactive dashboard visualises the financial records of Norwegian political parties from 2017 to 2024 using dynamic Sankey diagrams that make money flows easy to read. The underlying data is drawn from the official Party Funding portal (partifinansiering.no), which publishes reported donations, accounting figures and metadata required under the Political Parties Act.

Shiny R: SHUe - Statistikk for Høyere Utdanning (updated for spring 2025)

Dashboard project for visualizing openly available data for higher education in Norway. For simplicity sake the data is subset to include only one univeristy (NORD), but if there is any interest or I have time I might add other universities in Norway.

General information about universities are gathered from Database for statistikk om høyere utdanning, for applications related to Norwegian Resaerch Council I've used the data available at data.norge.no, and for EU Horizon projects I've gathered data from data.europa.eu

Python - Pydeck: Fangstdata

Pydeck code for exploring plots of large point-to-point datasets (700K points) on a map. Map showing where fishing boats have unloaded and from where it was caught. Example map with fewer points uploaded as an interactive example.

R/Python: Fiskeridirektoratet

Ongoing project from fiskeridirektoratets on ERS raports with records of caught fish. Mainly used for exploring different graphical modules in R and python, but examples could be of use to others. In this example I looked into cod comercial cod fishing in norway and made a heatmap time series animation where you can see how hot spots for comercial cod fishing in Norway since 2011.

R: Tolkien map from open source data

Trying to soo how far I can push the map making in R, this time I attempt to make a map over different parts of norway in the style of J.R.R Tolkien utilizing data from the offical Norwegian map database: Kartkatalogen.

Example image, code and data for vestvågøy included here.

R: xkcd samling map - Norwegian coast

This is my attempt at making a in the style of Randall Munroe's xkcd webcomic maps, this particular one is of the sampling locations used for my thesis. This map is made in R and utilises data from the offical Norwegian map database: Kartkatalogen.

Master thesis: population genetics on Orchomenella obtusa

This is a step-by-step guide for some of the not-so-well documented bioinformatics parts for my master thesis. A population genetics study on the scavenging amphipod species Orchomenella obtusa in fjords surrounding Saltstraumen (Skjerstadfjorden and Saltfjorden). Here I'm trying to determine if the sill separating the fjords are acting as a genetic barrier for the selected species (spoiler alert: it's not), by using amplicon sequences of the mitochondrial gene COI and rRNA gene 18S.

Pipeline for COI and 18S amplicon sequence variant calling: Quality control, adapter trimming, mapping, quality filtering, variant calling and creating multifasta files.
