Iain recommends the "Functional Pearl" style of paper, since they aim to be self-contained and easy to follow.
Find an interesting paper, but you're worried the reading group is missing prerequisite knowledge for it? Check if that paper cites something that better introduces the topic.
Evaluating papers
Martin recommends that you be able to answer three questions:
Why did you select the paper? (Can be personal interest or relevance to your research)
What will others in the reading group get out of it?
What prerequisite knowledge is needed for it?
Also, try to ensure the paper can be read within two hours.
